‘Dublin City’s Most Boring Building Award Ceremony 2023’ was a speculative site specific performance hosted by the imaginary ‘Institution of Boring Futures’.
The work highlights how the current urban sanitisation of Dublin City, through its exchange of important cultural sites and affordable housing for corporate buildings and luxury accommodation, is leading to the squandering of this city’s role as a home.
The use of humour in the work served to highlight the absurdity, irresponsibility and dysfunctionality that underpins current city planning and property development culture in Ireland. The event took place at the amphitheatre within Dublin City Council’s Wood Quay venue, the epicentre of Dublin City’s urban development regulation. The Amphitheatres boasts an impressive stage-like space, while also remaining vulnerable to public policing, testing the limitations and freedoms afforded to civilians of the city’s public realm.
The work expanded from an ‘Institution of Boring Futures’ website, an online voting system, and a carefully crafted live immersive event reception and ceremonial performance with a range of characters, each given equal attention and consideration.
The performance is immortalised in a ceremonial recap styled video. The recap video can be found at the bottom of this page.
