‘The Richest Man in Bagenalstown’ was a site specific explorative exhibition created during the Muine Bheag Arts ‘Commune’ Graduate Residency. Our graduate cohort focused on the ‘The Doc’s’ Petrol Station ran by ‘The Doc’ in Muine Bheag and it’s transgressive function as a third space for the locals.
‘If Google Maps was from Carlow’ was a zine produced during the Muine Bheag Arts ‘Commune’ Graduate programme as part of ‘The Richest Man in Bagenalstown’ exhibition.
It explores the fading oral tradition of asking for and giving directions, against the contrasting rise of and our recent reliance on digital navigation applications, such as Google Maps. A simple google maps direction interface was edited to replaced the text with word for word oral directions I received from locals during my field-work conversations.
These convoluted scripts act as a poetic investigation into the colloquial language of Muine Bheag and the personal relationships locals have with the infrastructure of their town.
