‘Promiscuous Self-Pollinators’ was an artistic contribution to Åsa Sonjasdotter’s ‘Kale Kulture’ symposium at the 40th EVA International, Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art. It was a series of individually designed seed packets, holding harvested seeds from NCAD’s ‘Field’ wild kale variety.
The design and sentiment of this work celebrates the nonuniformity and genetically liberated nature of kale, a famously promiscuous self-pollinator in the plant world. The collection’s colour swatches reflect the range of colours found in this feral variety and the curiously drawn forms were directly inspired by the plant's complex textures.
These individual pieces come together to metaphorically represent a complicated, diverse network of adaptable plant performers that encourage robust, radical biodiversity and a more hopeful future towards plant cultivation. The seed packets were disseminated to audience members at the event, in hopes of being pollinated and reproduced in new territories.
